Have Swelling In Your Legs? Get A Lymphatic Drainage Massage

by Jonathan Mason

Swelling in the legs is also known as lymphedema. It is caused by an infection, injury, or a genetic disorder. It can also happy after you have surgery. Lymphedema can make your legs and your feet painful especially if you are on them for long periods of time. Lymph fluid collects in your legs and/or feet. One way to deal with this is by getting a lymphatic drainage massage. Below is information on what this is and the benefits this offers you.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Make sure you have a licensed lymphatic massage therapist do this massage for you. The massage is gentler than a traditional massage. The therapist may have you do some deep breathing exercises when you arrive. This will help your body relax so the lymphatic drainage massage will work much better.

The therapist will focus on your legs and use long strokes and light pressure. This moves your lymph fluid away from your legs. The fluid then goes to your organs where toxins are removed. The therapist will start massaging at your ankles and move their way up your leg, moving the fluid as they do this. The therapist will likely go slow during the massage, especially if there is a lot of fluid built up in your legs.

After the massage, you will notice less swelling in your legs, which will continue to improve over the next few hours or into the next day. Consider having more than one massage for the most benefit. This may be once or twice a week. Talk with the massage therapist or your doctor about this.

Benefits of a Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Your doctor will likely have you wear stockings or tight compression bandages on your legs to treat lymphedema. With a drainage massage, you may not have to wear these stockings or bandages as much, which can save you time.

If you have swelling because of an injury or after surgery, this type of massage may help you heal even faster. If this swelling bothers you, getting this massage can help you feel much better about yourself.

Your legs will feel more relaxed and you will have less pain after the massage. This will allow you to do things you enjoy without having to worry about your legs getting tired or feeling a lot of pain in them.

Talk with a lymphatic drainage massage therapist to learn more about this type of massage.
